VOLUNTEERS
The Association of Horizon is seeking volunteers for our week-long summer camp for adults with disabilities. This is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages, especially students (ages 16+) to earn up to 144 service learning hours and experience a truly unique volunteer experience. Horizon Camp is great for those interested in diversity issues, or professional areas such as nursing, pre-med, occupational or physical therapy.
Horizon’s amazing volunteers make camp possible! Each year, the number of participants Horizon is able to accept for Summer Camp is directly connected to the number of generous individuals that volunteer their time for the week.
Summer Camp
Under the supervision of experienced camp leadership, volunteers are paired with an adult with a physical disability to spend the week together partaking in activities such as swimming, hiking, and canoeing, among others. The camp is 7 days and 6 nights at a beautiful and wheelchair accessible campground outside of Bloomington, IL and is provided free-of-cost to all our campers and volunteers.
In addition to earning over 140 service learning hours, as our volunteer you will:
– Gain skills assisting a person with a physical disability. Past volunteers, especially those interested in nursing, pre-med, and occupational or physical therapy, have used their time with Horizon as experience on their resumes and as topics for personal essays.
– Increase communication skills and ability to work on a team. Volunteers utilize teamwork and open-mindedness in their individual pairings and as part of a larger cabin unit.
– Expand your worldview to one with increased diversity and inclusion. Many of our first-time volunteers have never met a person with a disability before coming to Horizon. Our vision is to create a socially conscious community, where barriers between people with and without disabilities are transcended.
– Most importantly, have fun! Our volunteers get to spend a week camping in nature for no cost. Many of our campers and volunteers ride horses, canoe, fish, and get away from urban life for the first time!
No prior experience is necessary, just a willingness to help. All new camp volunteers will have an interview and attend a new volunteer orientation session prior to camp. Once at camp, volunteers will complete a Cabin Life orientation before participants arrive, to learn and practice different care activities such as different lifting and transferring techniques.
