Since Horizon began producing yearly summer camps we have impacted a lot of people with and without physical disabilities.  The experiences of our participants are often unmatched and the best week of the year for many. Here are what some our of campers and volunteers have to say…

You know that awkward moment when people do not know how to interact with someone with a disability? That disappears at Horizon Camp. People see themselves as what they have in common, not their differences.

You learn that when a group of people come together for a common cause, race, sex, religion… none of these matter. The heart takes over and complete strangers can make amazing things happen.

Horizon means more to me that I can put into words. Camp is a magical place because of the amazing people and experiences we share. Sharing camp with my daughter is a true highlight for me. I’m so proud that we celebrated our 25th anniversary in 2016!

I attended Horizon’s summer camp for the first time this year and it was such a great experience. Returning campers and counselors often referred to this week long camp as the “best week of the year.” After a couple days of being there, it wasn’t hard to see why. Although the campsite is great, it’s the people that make the experience so special. Looking forward to going back next year!

Horizon Camp is a place where, once a year, people with disabilities can go and relax and have fun! For six days, your disability fades and you’re judged not by your physical limitations, but for who you are as a person. And believe me, that’s a refreshing change from everyday life! Camp is a magical place where lifelong friends are formed, spirits are restored, and fun is the number one objective! So, if you want to meet the most amazing group of people ever and become a little more amazing yourself, Horizon Camp is the place to be!

I learned a lot about myself while coming to camp; one of the most important lessons I have learned is acceptance! I've learned to accept myself for who I am and not what others want me to be. Also through self acceptance, I've learned to accept and embrace others.

Association of Horizon gives the gift of freedom, independence and immeasurable memories. Through its yearly camp, I have met some of the most fun, loving, and selfless of people. What this organization does for people with disabilities is much needed and greatly appreciated. With a culture of inclusiveness and love, I speak from experience when I say, Association of Horizon camp changes lives.

What I have learned about myself by coming to camp is that I should no longer feel judged by my disability. Horizon Camp, for me, means that I am free to be who I am and not be afraid of people judging me.

I am not alone. Other adults have the same challenges and for a week we can be a community and have a respite from daily struggles.

Horizon allows me to continue going to place I've treasured for over half my life. It gives us a week of fun memories each summer as well as a "camp family" for support and fun times throughout the year.
